Common Resume Mistakes to Avoid
Spot common resume mistakes in formatting, relevance, dates, skills and achievement bullets, then use a practical checklist before applying.
Make the target role obvious
A resume that tries to fit every role can bury the evidence a recruiter needs. Tailor the summary, skills and strongest bullets to the specific vacancy.
Replace duties with evidence
“Responsible for reports” describes a duty; it does not show quality or impact. Explain what you produced, how you approached it and what changed. Use numbers only when verified.
Remove unsupported skills and claims
Do not list tools you cannot use, inflate job titles or claim team achievements as individual results. Interview questions often expose claims that lack detail.
Use consistent, readable formatting
Inconsistent dates, crowded sections, unusual headings and text embedded in images can slow review and complicate parsing. Use a clear hierarchy and check the exported file.
Check spelling, dates and links
A typo in contact information, mismatched dates or broken portfolio link can undermine an otherwise strong application. Proofread and open each link before sending.
Avoid keyword stuffing
Use the job description’s language when it truthfully matches your background. Repeating the same keyword without evidence makes the resume harder to read and does not establish competence.
Pre-application checklist
Do not rely on design alone
Visual polish cannot compensate for vague achievements or irrelevant content. Keep design appropriate to the role while prioritizing readability and evidence.
Keep personal information relevant
Include contact and professional links needed for the application. Avoid unrelated personal details unless the employer or local rules specifically require them.
Review from the reader’s perspective
Give the resume a quick scan: can someone identify your target role, strongest qualifications and most relevant achievement in a few seconds? If not, improve the hierarchy.
